All day
Sintra, the origin of the name came from a temple erected about 308 years before Christ, by Greeks, Gallo-Celts and Turduli, dedicated to the moon. The Celts called the moon Cynthia, the Arabs Chintra or Zintira.
In 1992, UNESCO expanded the categories of World Heritage and created the “Cultural Landscape”. Sintra was the first Cultural Landscape in Europe, classified in 1995.
Much has been written about Sintra.
“Sintra was a gift that King Solomon
took from earthly paradise
to have it offered to a king of Portugal…”
Gil Vicente
“Sight, little by little, is banished
Of those native mountains, which remained;
There was the expensive Tagus and the cool Serra
From Sintra, and her eyes lingered.
We also remained in the beloved land
The heart, which the sorrows left there.
And already after everything was hidden,
In short, we saw nothing but sea and sky.”
Canto Fifth
Luís de Camões
“Sintra Glorious Eden!
Lord Byron
“Today is the happiest day of my life. I know Italy, Sicily, Greece and Egypt, and I've never seen anything worthwhile. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. This is the real garden of Klingsor and at the top is the Castle of the Holy Grail.”
Richard Strauss
